HOW Leverkusen FRUSTRATED Bayern Munich? (1-1)

Xabi Alonso successfully stifled the Bavarian Storm of Kompany’s Bayern Munich. How did he go about doing it and was it sheer luck or a carefully crafted masterplan that Mourinho would be proud of?

We explain in depth how this was achieved and other salient tactical points from the game.

Very simple. In the past recent years, since Robben and Ribery left Bayern, they are struggling with teams that parks the bus and basically just playing for counters. All Kompany has to do is to fix this… the penetration inside the box or try more shots from outside the box(thats how Bayern scored the equaliser). Kimmich have good shooting abailities, Pavlovic, Kane, Musiala, Olise. All these players can shoot outside from the box. They tried it but didnt work out. They have to work on it. Because as soon as Bayern fixes this problems, they can beat the sh1t out of parking bus based teams, because there are many in the Bundesliga. Union Berlin is one of them, and a lot of teams will park the bus. If they want to play open game, they will quickly go down 3 – 0 inside the 1st half(game vs Bremen is the perfect example, game vs Dyn Zagreb, game vs Kiel etc.) So its not really on option to play open game vs Bayern. Many teams in the Bundesliga does not have to qualities to do that. Not even Leverkusen anymore, since Bayern playing like… it is basically Pep's Man City… Okay, more like a "BETA" version of that. 😀

As good as musiala is he has little impact in big games especially behind the striker as a 10 if you he’s easily marked out of games because he’s not a great goal threat from crosses nor is he a playmaker so his presence is hardly felt he might need a position change

Bayern right now are building up something new, while Leverkusen plays their style for many months now. Will Leverkusen get better? I don´t know. Will Bayern get better? Yes. Wenn Bayern gets rolling, every club in the world should be affraid of them.

Bayern practically choked Leverkusen, everyone is saying Xabi let them have the ball, but bayern's pressing was insanely organized.
The force the ball to the wingbacks, cut short passes and force long balls which they recovered easily and almost 100% of the time.
They were in control, they barely let any chance and played entertaining football.
Leverkusen done well in controlling tight spaces and prventing bayern from quality chances, but they looked toothless and without solutions

At Bologna, Lewis Ferguson liked to make runs in behind whenever Zirkzee dropped deep, so maybe managers could use a similar approach in the teams where Kane plays. And it doesn't only have to be the attacking midfielder. It could also be through an inside forward or inverted winger

I've been a Bayern fan for over 10 years and your analysis is spot on. All of Bayern's proper right-backs are injured (Boey and Stanisic) so it was either Guerreiro or Laimer, and Guerreiro offers more as a dribbler. I agree that it didn't really work and Olise was much quieter than he was when Boey was fit. I wouldn't be surprised to see Laimer as RB more, since Stansic and Boey are not coming back soon and Kimmich is doing well in midfield again.
