Bayern: Rebuilding the German Footballing Machine

Bayern Munich find themselves today in a very good position. Footballing success built on great business methods. But this was not the case throughout the Bavarian club’s history…..

After their third European cup in a row in 1976, Bayern lost many legends in a few years. They had to rebuild a new generation. And with the appointment of ex-player Uli Hoeness as General manager, that build was accelerated.

Although there were some early failures, Uli and Bayern got the hang of it and slowly but surely got back to winning ways. Some European disappointments in the way didn’t stop them from winning locally.

This is the story of Bayern Munich, and how they got back to the biggest podiums in Germany and Europe.

45:11 brilliant performance from Oliver Kahn. He was like a raging dragon when he faced shots. And also a big acknowledgement to Santiago Canizares, the Valencia goalkeeper, because he also saved like 3 penalties in this match as well.

38:39 that was some level of shithoussery from Steffen Effenberg 😂. But in all honesty, they got their revenge against both the teams that knocked them out in the last 2 campaigns in back to back rounds of the 2001 campaign. It was almost written in fate.

33:14 I would cut Lothar Matthaus some slack. The guy was 38 years old by the time the 1999 season was coming to a close. And back then especially, 38 years old as a footballer was really old.

32:51 yeah I would not know how the Bayern players would have recovered from that Champions League final loss and then play another domestic cup final couple of weeks later. I am glad that every UEFA members agreed later on that all the continental cup finals would happen after the end of the domestic seasons.

Bayern Munich may have won European Cup 6 times 1974, 1975, 1976, 2001, 2013 and 2020, it must still give them nightmares losing to Aston. Villa, Man United and Chelsea in 1982, 1999 and 2012, and Porto in 1987.

32:32 I remember watching the 99 Champions League final, my dad is a Man Utd fan and he didn’t get to watch the game as he, my mum and a couple of friends went to watch a concert that night so when he came back he asked how did the game go? I said “Bayern Munich scored after 6 minutes and gone 90 minutes Bayern Munich were still 1 nil up” so my dad said “so Man Utd lost then? I’m glad I didn’t see it now” and after a few seconds I told him “no Utd scored 2 goals in injury time and won” and my dad was so disappointed that he didn’t get to see the game and wished he got tickets to see the band in concert the following night but when he booked the tickets months earlier he did know it was on the same night as the Champions League final or that Man Utd would be in the final. He said the 2 game in the semi final when Man Utd came back to beat my team Juventus in Turin was the best he had seen them and then to go onto the final to win within the last couple of minutes was a great performance over those two teams

25:16 I’m English but I speak German fluently and my brother can speak German too but not fluently like he speak French and Trapattoni’s press conference reminds me of my brother speaking German. My favourite bits of the press conference is when he said “these 2-3 (players) play bad like half empty bottles” and “I’ve always had the shoulder over these players” but the half bottles comment was the best 😂😂 though he did his best and it could’ve been worse, at the end he says “I have finish” ok it’s not 100% correct but everyone would’ve understand that he had finished.

13:57 Dortmund may have lost the final of the UAFA Cup in 93 to Juventus but the got their revenge 4yrs later when they beat Champions League winners of 96 Juventus in the Champions League final in 97. And as a Juventus fan I thought for sure we were going to be the first club to win back to back Champions League titles but Dortmund shocked me and others by winning in 96 😮 😢

The music when the 99-00 season kicks off made me that anxious and suspenseful that I wasn’t even sure whether they’d win the 00-01 CL haha. Intense.
